Hematite Meaning: The Grounding Stone for Focus, Balance & Protection

Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with a distinctive metallic gray-black sheen. When polished, it looks like liquid silver — smooth, reflective, and cool to the touch. Its name comes from the Greek *haima*, meaning "blood," because when cut or ground, hematite turns the water red.

Hematite has been used for at least 40,000 years. Prehistoric cave painters used red ochre (powdered hematite) for their paintings. Ancient Romans wore hematite amulets for protection in battle. In the Middle Ages, it was believed to stop bleeding and heal blood disorders.
