Why Cleanse Crystals?

In crystal healing, stones are believed to absorb, transmute, and carry energy. When you wear a crystal, it absorbs not just your own energy, but the energy of everyone who handles it, every environment it passes through, and every intention you put into it.

Over time, this accumulated energy can make the stone feel "heavy" or less effective. Cleansing is the practice of resetting the stone's energy — clearing out the old so it can work fresh for you.

How often should you cleanse? Daily wear: once a week. Occasional use: once a month. New crystals: always cleanse before first use. After intense emotions or illness: cleanse immediately.

1. Moonlight Cleansing (Gentle, All Stones)

The gentlest and most universal method. Place your crystals or jewelry under the full moon overnight. The moon's light and energy wash away accumulated negativity without damaging any stone.

Best for: All stones, especially amethyst (which can fade in sunlight), rose quartz, moonstone, and delicate jewelry.

Pro tip: The new moon is for setting intentions; the full moon is for cleansing and recharging. A full moon cleanse is the crystal equivalent of a deep reset.

2. Sage Smudging (Fast, Protective)

Pass your crystals through the smoke of burning sage, palo santo, or cedar. The smoke is believed to attach to and carry away stagnant energy.

Best for: Most stones, especially protection stones like obsidian, black tourmaline, and hematite.

Caution: Some stones — especially porous ones like turquoise, howlite, and selenite — can absorb smoke residue over time. For these, keep the stone at a distance from the smoke source and move it through the smoke quickly.

3. Running Water (Refreshing, Not for All Stones)

Hold your crystals under cool running water (tap water, or better — a natural stream) for 30-60 seconds. Visualize the water washing away old energy.

Best for: Durable stones like clear quartz, amethyst (briefly), citrine, obsidian, and hematite (briefly).

NOT safe for: Turquoise (porous, absorbs water), selenite (water-soluble), malachite (toxic in water), lapis lazuli (soft, porous), and any stone with metal accents or glued settings. Never soak beaded jewelry — water weakens elastic cord.

4. Sound Cleansing (Safe for All)

Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, bell, or even a clear-toned chime near your crystals. The sound vibrations break up stagnant energy without any physical contact.

Best for: All stones, especially delicate pieces and jewelry that cannot get wet or be smudged.

Pro tip: 30-60 seconds of sound near your jewelry is enough. Let the sound fade naturally — do not stop it abruptly.

5. Earth Cleansing (Deep Reset)

Bury your crystals in clean soil (not a potted plant — the stone can affect the plant) for 24 hours. The earth's natural energy neutralizes and re-grounds the stone.

Best for: Grounding stones like obsidian, hematite, black tourmaline, and smoky quartz. These stones resonate with earth energy and feel "at home" in the soil.

NOT safe for: Soft stones, fragile jewelry, or stones with metal components. Mark the spot so you do not lose your piece.

6. Rice Cleansing (Quick, Dry)

Bury your crystals in a bowl of dry brown or white rice for 2-4 hours. Rice is believed to absorb negative energy from the stone. Afterward, dispose of the rice (do not cook or eat it).

Best for: Hard, non-porous stones that need a quick cleanse.

Caution: Small beads or delicate settings can get scratched by rice. Use a soft cloth between the rice and your jewelry for pieces with silver accents.

7. Crystal Bed Cleansing (Self-Cleaning)

Place your crystals on a bed of clear quartz clusters, selenite slabs, or amethyst geodes overnight. These stones are "self-cleaning" — they do not absorb negativity but rather transmute and clear the energy of stones placed on top of them.

Best for: All stones and jewelry. This is the safest, most hands-off method.

Pro tip: Keep a selenite slab or clear quartz cluster on your nightstand as a "charging station." Every night, place your bracelet or ring on it for an automatic recharge. No effort required.
