What Is Lapis Lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is a deep blue stone flecked with gold (pyrite) and white (calcite), giving it the appearance of a starry night sky. It has been prized for over 6,000 years — mined in Afghanistan since the Neolithic period.

The word "lapis" means stone in Latin; "lazuli" comes from the Persian *lazhward*, the name of the region where it was mined. The English word "azure" (and the color blue itself, in some etymologies) derives from lapis lazuli.

Lapis Lazuli Through History

Ancient Egypt: Lapis was the most prized gemstone of the pharaohs. It was carved into scarabs, amulets, and used in the famous death mask of Tutankhamun. Cleopatra used ground lapis as blue eyeshadow.

Renaissance art: Before synthetic paints, ground lapis lazuli was the source of ultramarine — the most expensive blue paint in the world. Michelangelo used it in the Sistine Chapel.

Ancient Persia and Rome: Lapis was believed to be a stone of royalty, wisdom, and the divine.
